One of the best things about a comedy show is discovering new acts that you absolutely love. At this year’s Sydney Comedy Festival I was lucky enough to see Rhys Nicholson’s new show I’m Fine.
Rhys has steadily been climbing and gaining popularity for the past few years. He has been to a number of Australian comedy festivals and last year was nominated for Best Act at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. So the responsibility for not hearing of him sooner falls squarely on my shoulders. However I hadn’t, and due to a last-minute cancellation of another show my plus one and I ended up seeing ‘I’m Fine’ — with no expectations, no research and very little notice.
Being the first night of the show, The Factory seemed to experience a couple of teething issues – namely, lights and music as Rhys started his show. His fantastic improv and ability to make light of the situation showed instantly what a great talent and professional we were seeing, and quickly set the tone for a fantastic evening of non-stop laughs.
Rhys Nicholson is like a maroon-haired Elvis Costello, but endlessly more funny. His polished appearance and distinctive voice mean that he literally stands out from the crowd and from many of the other acts at the festival this year.
His comedy was somewhere between Little Britain’s ‘Computer Says No’ and an over-the-top music video from the 80s. He was dry, hilarious and definitely worth seeing – again and again and again.
If you haven’t seen him yet (and even better if this is the first you’re hearing of him – you’re in for a treat!) then get your tickets now and go and see him before it’s too late!
