American Express OpenAir Cinema Comes To Inner West

After a successful run at a new location in Pyrmont, AmEx Openair Cinemas have launched in the Inner West in an ideal central location: Cadigal Green at the University of Sydney.

Unlike the launch in Pyrmont, we didn’t experience a thunderous downpour, but unfortunately, there was a persistent drizzle. However, it remained warm, food was tasty, and thirsts were quenched. Weather is always the catch with open-air cinemas, but as long as you prepare you will be fine.

The team did provide ponchos and there was shelter available, but as it was only drizzling we didn’t get too wet at all.

The movie chosen for the opening night was Once Upon a Deadpool, the PG-13 version of the Deadpool sequel. After having seen the original R rated film, I had little interest in seeing this muted variant, however, Deadpool is awesome and the addition of Fred Savage was delightfully random and worked.

It was a great choice of movie given the location — university students — and I’d imagine that the location could be busy for its run.

Similar to the Pyrmont location, Salts Meats Cheese provided food, and Pimms cocktails were served alongside Giesen wineBlack Devil Cider, and 4 Pine beers. A great addition was freshly popped popcorn in two flavours: Maple Butter (yum) and Red Chilli Pepper (smokey spicy). Interesting flavour combos and perfect for the setup. Also served at the venue is Hagen-Daz ice-cream if you need something to cool you down during a summer showing.

In addition to the delicious foods and beverages, you can even bring your doggo as the location is dog-friendly as well.

Their program features a range of films including the critically acclaimed A Star is Born, Vice, and recent Golden Globe-winning Bohemian Rhapsody. For all those romantics out there, there will be a showing of The Notebook and cult classic Dirty Dancing.
