Dog Man: The Musical at Sydney Opera House

DOG MAN: The Musical at the Sydney Opera House is a delightful romp through the world of the popular children’s book series by Dav Pilkey. The show, with its whimsical plot, book, and lyrics by Kevin Del Aguila and lively music by Brad Alexander, brings the beloved characters to life on stage in an entertaining way.

DOG MAN: The Musical follows the adventures of the titular character, Dog Man, a half-dog, half-human police officer with a penchant for justice. Joined by his quirky friends and facing off against the mischievous Petey the Cat, Dog Man must navigate a series of comical and heartwarming situations. The storyline is engaging and keeps the young audience members, as well as the young at heart, thoroughly entertained throughout the performance.

Kevin Del Aguila’s book and lyrics add a layer of humour and wit to the production. The dialogue is sharp, and the lyrics are catchy, making the musical a joy to watch. Del Aguila skilfully captures the essence of Dav Pilkey’s source material while adding his own creative twists and turns. The humour in the script is accessible to both children and adults, creating a shared experience of laughter in the audience.

Brad Alexander’s music is a highlight of the production, providing a lively and energetic backdrop to the on-stage antics. The songs are catchy and well-crafted, with various musical styles that keep the pace of the show dynamic. From upbeat ensemble numbers to heartfelt solos, Alexander’s music enhances the emotional resonance of the characters and their journey. The cast, backed by a talented orchestra, delivers the songs with enthusiasm and skill.

While DOG MAN: The Musical may never be nominated for a Tony Award, it excels in its ability to entertain and captivate its target audience. The production successfully translates the charm and humour of the book series into a theatrical experience that engages both children and adults. The colourful set design and imaginative costumes contribute to the show’s garage setting. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many children, especially boys, sit still and love a musical.

I took my six-year-old niece, who is always a harsh critic, and she said, “It was GREAT: 8 out of 10”. Succinct but covers everything I tried to convey. Grab your tickets before it closes.
