Summer’s Not Complete Without American Express Openair Cinemas

There’s nothing better than sitting under the open sky as dusk settles, watching flying foxes swoop back and forth behind a screen showing a great film. American Express Openair Cinemas is here to make sure your 2020 summer is the best it can be.

The Plus Ones attended the launch of the Inner West Sydney location. Conveniently located at Cadigal Green at the University of Sydney, it’s a 10-minute walk from Redfern Station (or a short Uber/Ola from pretty much anywhere in the Inner East or West).

Everything is effortless from the second you walk in. The bar’s to the right, the food trucks are to the left, and the movie screen is right to the front. Check, check, check.

The setting couldn’t be prettier: a grassy area in front of a gorgeous old University of Sydney building, ringed by trees. The comfortable seats make it seem like you’re at a friend’s house watching a movie — but no. The night we were there, a light breeze gently blew the tops of the threes, reminding us that we were indeed sitting outside.

You can catch movies that have all kinds of award-season buzz, like Hustlers (JLo for the Oscar!). There are family-friendly flicks (Frozen II), and even advanced screenings of films not even in theatres yet (Bombshell).

We were lucky enough to attend a screening of Knives Out, the hit whodunit from director Rian Johnson. (Y’know, the director behind Star Wars.) Starring Daniel Craig as Cajun detective Benoit Blanc, the stellar cast — including Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, and newcomer Ana de Armas — it’s a rollickin’ murder mystery. And worth watching for Chris Evans’ sweater alone. (No really, it’s a thing now.)

There are all sort of different ticket levels, to pick from, from General Admission (only $20!) to the Kathmandu Korner (which includes a Kathmandu Camping Chair, drink, popcorn and a discount voucher for up to 55% off Kathmandu gear in stores). Or bring a few friends along and do the Giesen Picnic: four entries to the event, a complimentary bottle of Giesen Wines Riesling Blush, and a picnic rug for the evening.

To top it all off, American Express Card Members can buy tickets to the American Express Lounge, save 15% on selected tickets, access the American Express Garden, and receive complimentary blanket hire. Sounds like a good reason to sign up for an Amex if you don’t have one already.

And did we mention it’s dog-friendly?!

No matter which ticket level you pick, or which film you see, you’re bound to have an amazing time at the American Express Openair Cinema this summer. Just hurry to book tickets before it’s all sold out!
