Time to wine down at Sydney’s Riesling Riot

Think you know all about Riesling? I headed to Riesling Riot at Sydney’s Town Hall to find out everything there was to know about this prestigious white wine. With over 80 experts and hosted by some of Australia’s finest Riesling makers from the likes of Jim Barry Wines, Frankland Estate and Pikes Wines – we knew it was an event not to be missed!

Upon entering we were handed a wine glass and a guidebook that informed us about all the wonderful wines we could taste and how we could learn from the professionals themselves. I got to work straight away and headed to Zarephath wines where I tried a few of their best picks – I especially loved their 2016 late harvest Riesling. It was sweet with cinnamon and spice notes, however it was beautifully dry and the type of wine I’d sip happily with a nice seafood dish.

Moving along I tried wines from all over Australia, New Zealand, America, France and Germany. I loved how the bold flavours were apparent depending on the country they were from – it really put the Riesling in perspective.

Once I’d done enough swirling, nodding, and pretending I knew a little bit more about wine than I really do, I headed to the cheese spread that was a very popular hit amongst guests. After all, who doesn’t love a good cheese platter, am I right? The prosciutto, sourdough breads, olives and ricotta dips paired perfectly with the wine that was flowing around the hall. I was in heaven!

Riesling Riot only comes along every few years, so make sure you keep an eye out for the next one. After all, everything happens for a Riesling!
