Broadway Musical ‘Newsies’ plays in cinemas

Everybody who wants to see a Tony-Award winning Broadway musical has the chance to do so at selected cinemas across Australia on Sunday 19 February. The stage performance of the Disney musical ‘Newsies‘ was filmed in Hollywood in 2016 and will be shown across the globe in special screenings for a limited time only. We got to sneak a peek at an exclusive preview Monday evening.

‘Newsies’ had its Broadway debut in 2012 and won many awards. The storyline is inspired by the 1899 Newsboys Strike in New York City. During the revolt the newsboys striked against a raise in price per newspaper and mistreatment by media mogul Joseph Pulitzer.

It is a bit ironic that Disney produces a musical in which mistreated employees unite and revolt against a corporation. However, the musical shows that if people stand together and work together, a better world can be created. Of course, ‘Newsies’ also includes a little love story, in which the hero and the villain’s daughter fall in love and fight together for what is right.

The musical is highly energetic and the dance performances are often mixed with impressive and acrobatic moves. For the filming of the musical performance, some of the original cast members reappeared, which is a special treat for fans of the musical.

The performers on stage are obviously very skilled and the musical talent of the singers is outstanding. All the performances are superbly timed and it is a joy to watch the performance. That said, it can be a bit odd to see a stage performance on the big screen — some viewers were soaked into the joyful mood and applauded with the live audience on screen in between scenes.
