Modern Chinese Degustations for both Vegans and Meat Eaters

Looking for a fun and affordable degustation? Shu Restaurant just launched a new ten course Sichuan degustation menu. It’s the meatier counterpart to their long running vegan degustation. Chef Shu incorporates the flavours of his hometown in the Sichuan province with his experience of living in Brunswick. The result is a modern Chinese menu in a quirky Collingwood venue.

The DIY style décor includes mini disco balls, purple baubles, and colourful bulbs hanging from the ceiling. There are also flamboyant flashes of hot pink, big potted plants, and records covering the back wall. The casual atmosphere, interesting food, and affordable menu items make it a great spot for dates or dining with friends.

The ten course vegan menu will set you back $55. While the seafood and meat menu comes in at $65. Many of the menu items are small bites, so you won’t leave feeling bloated. The opening Sichuan courses included a tender scallop topped with sweet passionfruit and nutty mushrooms with a pop of fingerlime.  One my favourites of the day come in the middle of the tasting journey – a rich potato cake that can best be described as ‘comfort food’. The meal also included a fresh beetroot salad with ginger and a whole tiger prawn that left a few of us wondering how to politely rip into the crustacean. The experience ended with a sweet treat in the form of a smooth avocado cheesecake with white wine and vodka poached pear.

The dishes were flavourful, without being overpowering. So they pair well with lighter drinks like rosé or a summer ale. Those willing to walk a few blocks off Smith Street will be rewarded with a vegan friendly venue that’s easy on the budget. In addition to the degustations, Shu also offers $25 experimental vegan Tuesdays and an $8 a la carte menu.
