The David Jones Elizabeth Street store has always held a special place in my heart. Over the years, I’ve always admired walking through the polished shop floors, marvelling at the opulent architecture and enjoying the bustling views out to Hyde Park from each window level. It’s more than just a department store for me – it’s a haven of elegance and nostalgia.
So, when I was invited to try out the new Champagne Jacquart Bar nestled within David Jones’ flagship store, how could I resist! The grand bar is located within the second floor of the store – a little haven that marries shopping and dining.
The sophisticated bar has been created in partnership with Create Catering and the iconic Australian retailer David Jones, who are known for transforming everyday pleasures into unforgettable experiences. The High Tea menu has been expertly curated by Head Chef Alessandro Morabito (ex Pepi’s and Bel & Brio) – so you know you’re in for a real treat!
Once seated, the friendly team were quick to offer us a glass of the Jacquart Mosaique NV. We first opted for the Brut which was lovely and light to drink. The windows offer prime views out to Hyde Park and the space itself is filled with lots of soft, natural lighting. Even though you’re in the centre of the city, the Champagne bar is a space that feels inviting to rest and enjoy a decadent bite to eat.
After admiring our surroundings, my plus one and I were delighted to start our high tea and indulge in an array of sweets and savoury bites. The atmosphere is bustling, yet feels relaxed. It’s the kind of meeting place that is perfect to catch up with friends, or hit pause whilst you shop.
The High Tea offers one of each item, so we cut some of our menu items in half, so we could try a little bit of everything. The poached slipper lobster meat on a brioche bun was a highlight for me, along with the stracchino and truffle mousse on soft bread. For those with a sweet tooth – you’ll be treated to a range of petit fours, along with a range of pastry tarts, a slice of Victoria sponge, coconut and mango panna cotta and of course, petite scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam.
When trying the desserts, I would recommend opting for a glass of the Champagne Jacquart Mosaique NV rose – we did and it was a lovely addition to compliment the scones.
The High Tea offers is especially reasonable considering you’re in the heart of the city. The Champagne Jacquart High Tea starts at $40.00 per person and ranges up to $55.00 pp with includes a glass of Jacquart Champagne (Brut or Rose).
The Elizabeth Street store feels like the perfect haven to indulge in a glass of French champagne and live life a little more opulently. If you’re looking for your next afternoon tea to try in Sydney – I’d highly recommend booking in with a group of friends!
