Step back to the roaring 20s and discover a world of opulence, glitz and Gatsby.
Directed by Craig Ilott, and presented in conjunction with Caper & Crow, GATSBY at the Green Light, is an immersive production currently taking stage at the studio in the Sydney Opera House.
Taking inspiration from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, GATSBY at the Green Light is a theatrical event that blends modern-day music sung by ARIA-nominated singer Odette, sophisticated acrobatics, cabaret, and gripping performances by fire dancers into a truly magical spectacle.
Once settled into your seat, you are swiftly transported to the extravagant soirées once hosted by the mysterious Jay Gatsby – it’s jazz and soul in all its resplendence. The Opera House studio is transformed into a vintage-inspired setting, complete with a functional bar that offers dry martinis and cocktails inspired by the Gatsby era.
Cleverly, the show captures the allure of the roaring twenties, a period marked by rapid cultural and technological evolution and thoughtfully blends it into a setting that resonates with the familiarity of our environment in which we live in today.
Much like the novel the twisted and tragic facets of Daisy and Gatsby’s love story, which serve as the main plot of the narrative are woven throughout the show. GATSBY at the Green Light skilfully delves deeper into their romantic story, interlacing it with snippets of dialogue that are played throughout. These poignant audio snippets are often accompanied by the iconic green light, which acts as a guiding beacon for the show highlighting Daisy and Gatsby’s everlasting connection for each other.
And just when you thought you might have seen everything, Bettie Bombshell’s spicy burlesque performance shines through. Her act is a celebration of inclusivity, individuality, self-expression and incredible skill.
Odette’s soulful voice is undoubtedly a standout in the production. Kim Moyes, musical director for GATSBY has curated a flawless soundtrack, weaving together jazz, soul and contemporary music that will have you singing the tunes long after the show has finished. Odette’s jazz-infused sounds take centre stage as she performs soulful renditions of modern pop songs throughout the performance, including a cover of ‘Money That’s What I Want’, complete with paper-printed money notes swirling around the stage.
GATSBY at The Green Light plays at the Studio, Sydney Opera House for an extended season until 24 March 2024. It’s
