An evening with Sierra Antiguo.

Tequila that’s both indulgent and smooth? Sign us up!

I was invited to the launch of Sierra’s newest tequila, the Antiguo range which was held at Chula in Sydney’s east. As someone who loves a good Marg, little did I know the Mexican mountains and rugged landscapes are crucial to produce such an important element of this fine spirit, agave. Agave syrup, you’ve probably heard about it and if not, you will have definitely had a drop of it in a cocktail of some sort. Sierra’s new range supplies tequila lovers with 100% agave tequila. The Antiguo Añejo edition made from blue weber agave which has been aged for up to 2 years in Bourbon casks.

Most Aussie’s will know their infamous Sierra Silver variety however, they’ve upped their game with a more premium offering. As Mario Kappes, global Advocacy & Education Manager for Sierra Tequila says ‘We believe the better the ingredients, the greater the indulgence – this range brings just that’.

Mario presented an interesting and informative presentation about agave plants and their rich syrupy goodness. He even let us know a few facts that I was pleasantly surprised to find out – especially about the agave plantation process. Who knew tequila could entail such heavy lifting!

We were also presented with two different tasting notes of each tequila to try – where we were invited to smell, taste and read more about the two new varieties while enjoying some Mexican fare. Now on to the food. Mexican food can often be taken as some cheese melted over a tortilla chip or two however, Chula provided Mexican food as it should be. Refined, with an ooze of sophistication.

We started the evening with an array of nuanced flavours like guacamole, coconut kingfish ceviche and spicy mango salsa – which had just the right amount of creaminess and spice. As the evening rolled on, we were served BBQ corn on the cob, zesty jalapeno poppers, baja fish tacos, beef birra tortillas and patatas bravas.

We happily washed the meal down with smoky Old Fashioned’s made from the exotic Sierra Antiguo Añejo Premium Tequila and salted caramel churros. The cocktail has gorgeous golden hues from the tequila – think vanilla, oranges, cloves and pepper with a fruity finish.

All in all, it was a fabulous evening with Sierra, served with everything you want in a drink and more.

Sierra’s latest Antiguo range allows you to feel like you’ve been transported to Mexico in one sip. Now we’ll drink to that, Salud!
