Holy Duck! restaurant opens in Chippendale

‘Holy duck, this food is delicious!’ we said as we each devoured our first tasty morsel for the evening at Holy Duck!. Their launch party was a chance to sample tastings of the restaurant’s signature dishes specialising in — you guessed it — the almighty duck.

I was quick to ask how big the portion size was regularly, as the popcorn chicken is something I will definitely be back for. Crunchy sweet goodness on the outside and juicy tender chicken on the inside. It’s perfect to share with friends or hog the plate all to yourself — don’t even try to resist it.

Holy Duck! is the latest venture from Chefs Gallery, a longtime restaurant favourite of many Sydneysiders. It’s nestled between Spice Alley and French restaurant Bistrot Gavroche within the old Carlton United Brewery in Kensington Street, Chippendale.

In a street where a variety of Asian cuisine can be had, Holy Duck! offers something different: a modern take on Chinese barbeque, with duck at the forefront of the menu.

Add a twist of western influence and you have a menu that features fresh burgers with chicken, pork, duck and a vegetarian option. There are also pork buns, delectable duck pancakes, or whole ducks doused in delicious house-made sauces.

As the night rolled on, we sampled a number of dishes. Caramelised sweet and sticky pork on rice with green apple and sake sauce was caringly assembled before our eyes. Duck pancakes made with the freshest of ingredients perfectly coupled with barbeque duck.

The elusive duck burger didn’t even make it beyond the heatlamp-lit bench at the boundary of the kitchen, where the entire tray was consumed by the hungry hordes (much to my dismay). Duck season was clearly open!

Holy Duck! offers a relaxed dining experience and decent prices, with favourites you will be returning for time and time again. Duck in and see for yourself.
