107 Project’s secret rooftop bar – open for the summer

There’s a secret rooftop garden bar in Redfern. And it’s amazing.

It’s on the rooftop of 107 Projects, a charity that you’re about to fall in love with. The building that hosts them (right on Redfern street, a hop, skip and a jump from Redfern station) has it all: a bar downstairs. A woodworking shop. A room for cinema showings. Life drawing.

Now, they’re adding to it with a beautiful rooftop garden bar. And this weekend it’s open to the public for three days.

Putting the ‘garden’ in ‘rooftop garden’ is permaculture giant Milkwood. Huge fig trees vye with terraced herb planters. There’s a tiny pool full of water tinkling in one corner, while a DJ plays under the cover of a tree. It’s a magical, beautiful place that could benefit from one thing only: more fairy lights.

Inside the rooftop room, a bar serves up wine, beer, and espresso martinis. Apparently there’s a concoction called the ‘Gaffogato’ (espresso poured on top of a Golden Gaytime). You can also order dumplings and the like.

On opening night, I sipped a rose and chatted to the friendly folks at 107, plus had a great time people-watching. So basically, you can spend the entire day and evening at 107’s rooftop.

They have a great lineup of live music the rest of the launch weekend:

Saturday 14th January 4–9pm: For Folk Sake

Don’t Folk around come on and get the folk down. With the best offerings of live music from folk to alt, featuring a delicious Suzy Spoon BBQ, For Folk Sake is all about enjoying your Saturday with the best of folk from around the country.

4pm: Leroy Lee | 5pm: Nic Cassey | 6pm: Luke Escombe | 7pm: Easy Street | 8pm on: DJ
Doors open 3pm.

Sunday 15th January 2.30–9pm: Bare Necessities

Born out of a shared love for sub bass, frantic percussion and street party vibes Bare Necessities Music begun as a radio show on FBI Click hosted by Sydney musicians Klue, Sam Z, Ribongia, Vuli and Moody.

With a limited liquor license, the rooftop bar has a limit on numbers of people. Translation: it’s not crowded once you get up; it’s just getting in that can take time. Planning to go tonight or tomorrow? Text your name and details to 0411375367 to ensure you don’t have to queue.

While you wait, there’s more action on the street level. A bar, a DJ, room to dance — I recommend spending time on the rooftop and finishing your night below for a boogie. Either way, you’re bound to have a great time.
