There’s nothing better than a hot summer’s day with a glass of wine that feels like it was made for the occasion. Loire Wines recently launched their summer range, and I had the chance to savour three exceptional offerings. Each one brings something unique to the table, making them perfect for an Aussie summer or a festive Christmas spread. Here’s my take on three highlights:
1. Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie, Domaine des Amoureux (2022) – $14.99
This dry white wine is a coastal dream. Made from 100% Melon de Bourgogne and aged on lees for 15 months, it has a pale yellow hue and a nose brimming with lime and wildflowers. It offers a refreshing balance of lively acidity and soft citrus notes on the palate, rounded out with yellow fruits.
This wine would pair perfectly with fresh prawns and oysters on the Christmas table or a simple seafood salad with mango and avocado. For mains, it would complement barbecued snapper or salmon, letting the zesty citrus notes shine.
2. Crémant de Loire, Gratien & Meyer – $22.99
Celebrations call for bubbles, and this Crémant de Loire delivers. Its pale yellow sparkle and delicate effervescence carry white flowers, lime, and green apple aromas. On the palate, it’s smooth and vibrant, with a subtle hint of pear on the finish.
Serve this with glazed Christmas ham or a roast chicken with crispy skin—it has the finesse to match these festive flavours. It’s also a crowd-pleaser with fresh fruit platters or pavlova topped with seasonal berries.
3. Chinon, Marquis de Surblet, Cabernet Franc – $14.99
This Chinon Cabernet Franc is an earthy, aromatic red that’s perfect for summer evenings or a Christmas feast. Its deep garnet colour hints at red fruits like blackcurrant, raspberry, and redcurrant. The palate is smooth with velvety tannins, making it incredibly versatile.
This is an ideal match for a roasted lamb leg with rosemary or a classic beef brisket. It would also be fantastic alongside a selection of cold cuts and hard cheeses—perfect for grazing on a warm Christmas afternoon.
Loire Wines have crafted a versatile and vibrant summer range. From the crisp minerality of the Muscadet to the celebratory sparkle of the Crémant and the robust elegance of the Chinon, each wine brings a touch of French flair while fitting seamlessly into the Australian Christmas tradition.
