Big, bold, and comedy gold! The smash hit big-hearted, multi award-winning Broadway hit musical Hairspray in back in Melbourne, playing at the iconic Regent Theatre. Starring much-loved stage and screen performer Shane Jacobson in drag as Edna Turnblad, Todd McKenney as her doting husband Wilbur Turnblad, the fabulous Rhonda Burchmore as a love-to-hate Velma Von Tussle, Rob Mills as Corny Collins, Asabi Goodman as a powerhouse Motormouth Maybelle and introducing Carmel Rodrigues as Tracy Turnblad in the title role. This is a dream cast.
It’s 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable curvy teen, Tracy Turnblad (Rodrigues), has only one desire – to dance on the popular “Corny Collins Show.” When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star and uses her new found fame to advocate for racial integration.
Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Hairspray’s story is more effective and pertinent than ever; and with the brilliant original creative team at the helm, this joyous new Australian production features the feel-good songs “Good Morning, Baltimore”, “Big, Blonde and Beautiful” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat”. We loved the joy each performer put into every moment of the production. Particular highlights of the show were Jacobson and McKenney’s hilarious duet, and the powerhouse performances from both Burchmore and Goodman. It’s hard to fault these stars.
Hairspray is camp at its most fabulous. Don’t miss this funny and fantastic musical sensation.
