MSO Takes On The Godfather

The MSO has established itself as a unique purveyor of experiences Melbourne-wide. Take their secret symphonies for example: secret location, released on the day, limited to a number of places, free and uber, uber cool – it’s so Melbourne we just can’t even.

The ‘live in concert’ movie sessions have seen productions for some time now and each has been one un-adulterated hit after another. When I heard the next iteration was the Godfather, I just had to. You don’t need me to tell you that it’s one of the greatest movies of all time. Like a good wine, every time I see it, it keeps on getting better. Now set this work of genius to a live score played by the MSO!

At a three hour running time with a short interval the musicians had their work cut out for them. In true MSO style, it was performed flawlessly. Me, and I suspect most people in the audience felt a little chill as the opening sequence played out. The acoustics of Hamer Hall are incredible for symphony and the score was played out to perfection. So much so, that at times during the performance I actually forgot that the orchestra was there.

Dr. Shih-hung Young, an international conductor from Malaysia and movie-conductor specialist, appears to have been flown in specifically for the performance. I’m no musical specialist and my ear isn’t quite tuned for nuance but I do understand organisation and he conducted the 100 piece symphony orchestra to aplomb.

If you want a full MSO experience I can’t imagine a better way. It was truly epic. The team’s next iteration will be Indiana Jones, if you want an experience like no other I’d highly recommend that you check it out.
