Some say August is a dead month, a prelude, or a holding place to its more illustrious cousins in the warmer periods. Balls we say to this, balls! There are some epic happenings on during the month and as always we’ll be going to them all. Read on for our top five picks.
Jazz Party Mondays (free): Every Monday in August. Who doesn’t like to jive on a Monday? All throughout August the band will have crowds heaving and bopping together at the Gasometer Hotel. We’re regular attendees and can’t wait for the sets!
Melbourne International Film Festival: 1-16 August. We don’t need to say much about this one. It’s one of the oldest (and best) film festivals in the world. This is Melbourne’s premier film festival.
Top Shelf Boutique Drinks Festival: 8 & 9 August. It’s a seven-hour-long boutique liquor extravaganza! We’ve been before, loved it. Can’t wait to go again. Come and join us!
Glow Winter Arts Festival (free): 13-23 August. This festival is a smorgasbord of arts! We’re so excited about it that we produced an entire guide. Want to have an unique Glow Festival experience? Join us for a VIP night on 13 August at the ice skating rink surrounded by a shipping container metropolis in the heart of Chapel Street. The majority of events are free, so make sure to soak it all in.
Laneway Learning Science Specatcular: 23 August. We’re huge fans of Laneway Learning (Theresa even teaches there). This afternoon of workshops will answer pressing questions like “Why are chillies hot? Why don’t you fall off a bicycle when it’s moving? What would it be like to visit space?” It’s part of National Science Week.
No matter where you head in August, be it ice skating, trying out a new craft liquor, or soaking up some jazz, we hope you realise this is one of the best months of the year.
