Truck Stop Deluxe grand opening

On Tuesday night my lucky plus one and I received a last minute invite to board a double-decker party bus, stocked to the brim with cocktails and beer, and be escorted off to Werribee…yes that’s right, Werribee. ‘I don’t even go that far on my holidays’, I thought to myself. But for a candied bacon-topped spiked milkshake, it’s a trip I will make again.

Truck Stop Deluxe is the new venture from the team behind Grand Trailer Park Taverna on Bourke Street (which Theresa & Ruki reviewed). The team includes my personal favourite bun maestro, Jimmy from Jimmy’s Burgers in South Melbourne. They really did pull out all the stops on the Truck Stop Deluxe fit out: it’s complete with two truck cabs that we were welcome to climb inside.

If you’re a Trailer Park fan, all the favourites from the menu remain, but who can go past the Francis Underwood (yeah, the one with a mac’n’cheese croquette in the burger). It’s the stuff artery-clogging dreams are made of, pure cheesy goodness. So why not go all the way and add some bacon?

Another popular favourite of the night was the fried chicken. I was lucky to get my hands on a bucket before our bus departed, although I didn’t think I could fit another thing in my face after two burgers, sweet potato fries, two spiked shakes, and who knows how many glasses of sparkling. By this time I could feel my second chin growing, but for the sake of fried chicken I finished the whole thing. Who wastes fried chicken, right?

I’m sure the Werribee locals will rejoice over no longer having to trek into the city for some epic burger love. For us city folk, next time your heading for a weekend away and passing by on the freeway it’s definitely worth a stop by. Make sure you grab one of those candied bacon shakes, too!
