Now or Never is back with over 100 free and ticketed events to entertain Melbournians and those visiting with another electrifying and diverse lineup of performances, installations, and talks that will leave you breathless.
Addressing the theme ‘Look through the image’, the year’s expansive program brings visual language to the forefront of the program, with a focus on large works designed to shift perspectives and push boundaries.
There is simply too much to see in one weekend, so here are our top highlights for you have to add to your to-do list.
A Celestial Spectacle: Constellations
Step into a world of wonder at Constellations, a mesmerizing light installation by Joanie Lemercier. As dusk falls, the Yarra River becomes a canvas for a breathtaking display of celestial formations.
Watch as shimmering reflections dance on the water and the air, creating a magical and ethereal atmosphere. While you might be tempted to watch the light show from the bridge, our recommendation is to pull up a chair (and grab a wine) at Sake.
Dance of the Machines: Plagiary
Experience the future of dance at Plagiary, a groundbreaking performance that blends human movement with artificial intelligence. Each night, a group of exceptional dancers improvise to a computer-generated score, creating a unique and unpredictable spectacle.
It’s a captivating fusion of technology and artistry that will leave you in awe. Make sure you get a ticket on the website for this one!
A Sonic Journey at the Royal Exhibition Building.
Prepare to be immersed in a cacophony of sound and visuals as one of our favourite Now or Never events returns at the beautiful Carlton Royal Exhibition Centre.
These wildly different experience takes place over four big nights, and features a completely different and brilliant lineup each time. Check out the full program here.
SOFT CENTRE presents SUPERMODEL
Cutting-edge Eora arts collective SOFT CENTRE makes its long-awaited Narrm debut with SUPERMODEL, an expansive three-day program of ecstatic performances, deep-dive keynotes, screenings and workshops unfolding at Trades Hall from 29-31 August.
We’re particularly interested in Björk producer Hulubalang who will be teaming up with Brandon Tay [SG] to present a new A/V show BUNYI BUNYI TUMBAL, a haunting reimagining of Indonesia’s violent colonial past.
Queer Power Point
This show really is what it says on the label. Inspired by some truly hilarious powerpoint nights with friends, this show invites queers to share some stories with our love-to-hate Microsoft application Powerpoint.
Now or Never is more than just a festival; it’s a celebration of creativity, innovation, and the human spirit. With a diverse range of events that cater to all interests, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
