Brunswick’s New Watering Hole – Miss Moses

Sydney Road has a new local. She’s not your typical Brunswick hipster or Melbournista yuppie. Nosiree, she’s a down to earth, unpretentious, no bullshit type of gal – the place where normal people like to hang out and have normal conversations. Meet Miss Moses.

Miss Moses is the brainchild of James Knox, a beer lover with a long-standing career in hospitality. Knox saw the opportunity to open a bar on the north end of Sydney Road Brunswick (near the police station) which was lacking in the funky bar department. His goal was to open a spot for the locals with a homely local vibe, and that’s exactly what he did.

You won’t find any marble countertops or feature lighting here. Instead, tall tables fill an exposed brick wall perimeter, and a frosty beer tap beckons patrons with an alluring magnetism. Miss Moses is your classical local bar (which seems to be a rare species in Melbourne these days).

The kitchen serves up bar snacks and sandwiches with an extensive beer list to suit. I wouldn’t describe myself as a sandwich enthusiast, but the El Jefe (Peruvian pulled pork, maple bacon, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, and dijonaise) gave me Spanish foodie dreams for a week. The roll was perfectly toasted with savoury fillings and molten cheese.

I ordered the Crispy Hot Bastard Chicken Ribs as a side, now I do profess to be an expert in the area of crispy chicken, and these little babies get a 10 out of 10 in my book. They’re like chicken ribs on crack, a crispy shell glazed in a sweet sauce, paired with a tangy dipping mayonnaise. Fork yes!

Everything went down easily with my Steam Funk Raspberry Berliner sour on one of Melbourne’s scorching 40 degree days.

James hand selects the finest local and global craft beers to showcase at Miss Moses. You can find everything from Stomping Ground Pale Ale to Lime Crisis – a limited edition Mountain Goat Double IPA with Himalayan salt and fresh limes. The tap line-up is constantly rotating to feature new releases and old favourites.
