The Sunset Cinema 2016 – The Plus Ones’ Guide to Melbourne’s newest outdoor cinema

November is when the days are becoming longer, the weather is getting warmer and the holiday season is getting closer. It is also the month when The Sunset Cinema will be running on every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. With 14 different films that vary from new releases, childrens’ movies and old classics, the selection on offer could leave you with difficult decisions on what to see.

The opening night screening on 4 November is the eagerly anticipated The Girl on the Train which is based on the best selling novel by Paula Hawkings. With a stellar cast including Emily Blunt, Justin Theroux and Lisa Kudrow, this psychological thriller about the intertwining lives of three women will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Children are sure to enjoy The Sunset Cinema with a couple of new animated movies for them. The Secret Life of Pets explores the world from our furry friends’ point of view, and looks at what happens when the family dog is stripped of his favourite status by a new addition to the family. Storks are traditionally known for delivery babies, but in this latest movie, they deliver packages for a global internet giant. This may seem like a simple task, but when the baby making machine is activated, and the company’s top delivery stork produces an unauthorised baby girl, chaos is sure to ensue!

The old 1980s cult classic Dirty Dancing is on the bill, allowing you to relieve the big hairdos, the cheesy dance movies and the songs that everyone knows the words to. This is definitely the perfect movie for a girls’ night, complete with Patrick Swayze and his impeccable hairdo.

The latest Tom Hanks movie is my last pick of the series. Directed by Clint Eastwood, Sully tells the story of Captain “Sully” Sullenberger who managed to safely land his plane on the Hudson River and save the lives of the 155 passengers on board. However as he was receiving accolades for his aviation skills, he was also the subject of an investigation that was threatening to destroy his career and his reputation.

Held at the Gasworks Arts Park in South Melbourne, The Sunset Cinema provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy the beginning of summer in lovely surroundings with some great movies on the big screen.
