Artwork made from coffee at Locale Espresso’s charity art auction

I love coffee, yet something went horribly wrong this week and I managed to go three days without the glorious liquid gold. What better way to end that drought than an entire morning at coffee legends Locale Espresso‘s coffee lab for the presentation of a group of amazing paintings.

The space at the Lab is wonderful — a bright minimalist space with windows looking out over an amount of greenery that would seem more in place in the Dandenong Ranges. It took me approximately two minutes after walking in the door to find myself equipped with a beautiful blend 141 latte, and my caffeine-deprived self was suddenly whole again.

The art featured was sourced from all over Australia. Artists were armed with a double espresso and a ristretto, and the only limit was their imagination. There were no artist names displayed, but the paintings were varied and all were beautiful. One of two elderly men sitting at a bar looks suited to hang on the walls of Pellegrini’s or any good traditional Lygon Street haunt, and an incredibly detailed pointillism style bee had everyone entranced. I’m unsure if it was politically inclined (global warming = no bees = no coffee trees) but regardless, it was a beautiful piece of art.

There were some abstracts, some fashion-style portraits, traditional style Greek gods. Each had taken their doses of coffee and turned them into something much more productive than I tend to produce after consuming three shots (which coincidentally is how many coffees I had at Locale).

The event was a lovely low-key premiere, and the art is just a glimpse into the range of things that can be accomplished with different mediums. Who knows, maybe you’ll dip a brush into your next short black?
