Comedy Festival: Little Mountain Goblin

‘Little Mountain Goblin’ debuted last year at the Melbourne Fringe Festival: a wonderfully relevant solo sketch show touching upon the aspects of ourselves that eat away at our esteem and productivity. This year’s edition of the show was an absolute pleasure to revisit.

Originally reviewed on a preview night without an audience to fully gauge a reaction from, this show has been developed, renewed, refined and mastered into a solid piece of comedy and theatre. Some new sketches have made it through, some concepts have changed ever-so-slightly. Now, in the Melbourne Comedy Festival of 2016, this polished gem of a show is about to come to the end of its run. If you have not witnessed the beauty and diligence of Brianna Williams’ debut solo sketch show, you are unfortunately running short on time.

There is one significant highlight to this show that deserves to be mentioned upon a second viewing. There is a fair amount of audience participation, and once again the kind that makes the participants look good. There is so much to this show that relies heavily upon reacting to whatever an audience member gives back and spinning that into comedy gold, and Williams’ skill in this department not only reinforces her natural mastery as a professional improvisor, but also her very quick wit and in-built comical nature.

The future for comedy in Melbourne looks very strong when somebody with this much adaptable and lightning jocularity can perfect a show with hauntingly relatable material and smash it. As stated: an absolute pleasure to witness, both times around.
