We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to give it a shot ourselves, in their lovely Belconnen Arts Centre studio. They describe the workshop as a two-hour introduction to the basics of silver or gold smithing, a hands-on experience where you get the opportunity to learn a variety of techniques from experienced ring-making teachers. With everything supplied, and the opportunity to make two cool sterling silver rings, we were keen, and blonde. definitely delivered.
We attended the workshop on a sunny winter day. The workshop was easy to find, tucked away in the back of the beautiful Belconnen Arts Centre studio, and they supplied us with a map in advance.
Everything was set-up for our arrival. All our tools were laid out, we were directed to our seats, and the ring-making begun.
We started off with a smaller silver ring, ideal for ring-stacking. The teacher took us through each step, providing easy to understand instructions. There was ample time between each step, and we appreciated that the lovely staff walked around the table, helping us along the way. It was definitely beginner friendly – we came with absolutely no prior experience, and walked away very happy. One of the most exciting parts of crafting the smaller silver ring was trying out the blow torch (which reminded us of the year seven Bunsen burner experience). If you’re worried about burning yourself, don’t be – the staff are happy to help out if needed.
Once we were happy with our smaller rings, we moved onto our bigger ones. This time, we were able to choose the width of our ring. We followed a similar process: sizing, shaping, cutting, smelting, but this time, we added on a new step: stamping. We were given the opportunity to take our pick of numbers and letters, and stamp away. Top tip: you can stamp on the inside and the outside of your ring, if you’d like a hidden message, for your eyes only. Stamping was good fun: we were given a small mallet, and it was very satisfying to stamp a letter into the metal.
After the stamping and smelting came the polishing. By this point, the rings were complete, and just needed a bit of love. We were given six polishing clothes, and these transformed our rings from dull to shiny. There was also the opportunity to add some texture to our rings – so if you’re after a grunge-y, natural style look, you’ll be given the opportunity to do so.
The two hours flew by, and before we knew it, we were finished. It was a fantastic experience, and we appreciated how kind and informative the staff were. They definitely made the experience that much better.
Alongside the welcoming learning environment and experienced staff, an aspect that stood out to us was the level of customisation. We were able to customise everything from the size to the shape of the ring, and we were even able to put lettering and numbering on the inside or outside. The materials provided were a very high quality: water, sweat and rust-proof, meaning we could easily wear them daily. We were very satisfied with our rings: they fit perfectly, and we love the look of them.
