In the lead up to National Margarita Day on February 22, Maestro Dobel Tequila & Bar Bambi decided that every day this week should be an occasion to celebrate with a tasty margarita and welcomed my plus one and I for an evening of curated margaritas and Bar Bambi’s signature set dining menu.
Bar Bambi is a stunning late night bar tucked down ACDC Lane (in the former Cherry Bar building) which is known for their italian cocktails, wine, tasty share plates & live music into the late hours of the weekend. On the night we arrived it had been transformed into a tequila lovers paradise.
The team from Maestro Dobel had prepared four paired cocktails to match Bar Bambi’s set menu. First up was a welcome drink straight from their cocktail fountain – yes you read that right – COCKTAIL FOUNTAIN! As we sipped our humito smoked blood orange margarita with smoked rosemary sprigs we admired the fit out of the venue. Think luxurious velvet couches, marble bar tops and classy dim lighting.
It was at that point a live piano player began singing and we made our way to our tables to try the first part of our meal; kingfish crudo in lemon dressing with a hint of Dobel diamanté tequila and some amazing burrata caprese mozarella with fresh tomato and basil. The burrata was perfect alongside the humito coconut margarita which looked absolutely stunning with its flower garnish.
During our mains course of Bambi’s iconic vodka pasta, a simple cabbage salad and chargrilled chicken we were served a spicy habanero margarita that really packed a punch. The live music from a roaming mariachi had everyone on our table clapping along in time to the tunes.
Finally it was time for dessert, and of course it had to be another margarita! This time we received a Maestro Dobel anejo espresso nitro-martini which came out with cream on top and looked very pretty. The flavours of coffee and tequila were really nicely balanced once we mixed the two layers together – almost like a Tiramisu.
The night was a great example of how versatile tequila can be, and how far you can push what could be clarified as a margarita. It was also good to learn a little more about Maestro Dobel Tequilas as it’s a brand I wasn’t familiar with before the night. It’s great to have venues like Bar Bambi putting on fun events that show off Melbourne’s creative food and drinks scene and if you’re in the mood for a margarita with a twist, it should be your first point of call for something a little bit different.
