After the release of their fourth studio album, Surrender, RÜFÜS DU SOL are back touring Australia with their biggest ever live show production. My plus one and I were lucky enough to head along to their second sold-out event at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne on a chilly Friday evening.
The festival setup was elaborate, with plenty of different food trucks scattered around the massive outdoor venue that was clearly designed with Covid restrictions in mind. Joining the band for the tour is Jon Hopkins from the UK, performing his live audio & visual show, and Australian house & techno newcomers Luke Alessi and RONA. Their tracks complimented Rufus’s style of music perfectly.
Then it was time for the main act. It’s incredible to see how far the band has come with these huge new festival-style live gigs. Playing for almost two hours, the were no end of hits. Beginning the night with ‘Make it Happen‘ and ‘You Were Right‘ the crowd was living for every moment right from the beginning. As the sun began to set, the stage was bathed in a beautiful golden hour and even more great tunes like ‘Sundream‘ and a personal favourite, ‘Surrender‘.
Once it got a bit darker, the laser show came out with a truly incredible light show pulsating in time to their lush tracks ‘Innerbloom‘ and ‘Underwater‘. I don’t think anyone stopped dancing for the full two hours. We’re so excited to celebrate the return of live music and to have welcomed RÜFÜS DU SOL home at their first live Australian shows in over 2 years!
