The magic of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella

Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella is a contemporary, feel-good take on the classic tale, which is now showing at the Regent Theatre, Melbourne. This wonderful imagining of the story we all know and love will have you gasping at jaw-dropping transformations that would make a drag queen blush.

It was fabulous to take a trip back to the whimsical world of musical theatre, alongside it being my plus ones first Rodgers + Hammerstein experience. It was so much fun to see the delight in their eyes as the high-camp costumes dazzled across the stage.

The production features some of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s most beloved songs, including “In My Own Little Corner,” “Impossible/It’s Possible” and “Ten Minutes Ago”, which were impossible not to sing along to!

Shubshri Kandiah, who took our hearts in the national tour of Aladdin, stars as Ella, and captures the eye of the very handsome Prince Topher, played by Ainsley Melham. The two first cross paths when Ella offers him some water after he saves the town from an attack by a giant praying mantis.

After Ella’s fairy godmother gives her the old magic-makeover in order to gain access to the ball, she becomes the envy of the town, and the rest is history.

The highlight is the miraculous costume changes, which bring real magic to the transformations of both Ella and her Fairy Godmother. There were so many double-take moments where my plus one and I exchanged glances of disbelief. This is a show that will leave you feeling enchanted, long-after you leave the auditorium.

Cinderella is now showing at the Regent Theatre until 23 July, tickets available here.
