Your guide to September 2017: all the festivals and all the fun in Melbourne

September marks the start of spring, along with some of our favourite yearly festivals in Melbourne! Be it the return of Melbourne Fringe (arguably the most fun few weeks of the year), or the stylish events around the newly re-named Melbourne Fashion Week, there’s something to keep everyone entertained. Add in a healthy dose of art, food, and Oktoberfest events and you have yourself the best September yet.

Melbourne fashion Week

Melbourne Writers Festival (25 Aug-3 September)
Glide into the month with the cultural juggernaut that is MFW. Let the program of authors and books inspire you to read and think. Plus, check out our guide to the top events.

Melbourne Fashion Week (1-8 September)
Top Australian and international designers are on display at the Royal Exhibition Centre in Carlton. Add some glamour to your life and book in for one of the runway shows. It’s a little dose of Milan/Paris/NYC in the midst of the city.

Shir Madness Jewish Music Festival (3 September)
Billed as ‘Jewish music beyond belief’, you truly won’t believe the talent amassed at this one-day festival, once more returning to Melbourne after a sold-out 2015 event. Treat your ears to 30 different acts.

Montsalvat Arts Festival

Murder Mystery Dinner @ Melbourne Zoo (9 September)
Not only is this a murder mystery… at the Melbourne Zoo… it’s also set at a 1970s disco. We couldn’t be more excited for this if we tried. Grab your tickets before it sells out.

Montsalvat Arts Festival (10 September)
Hidden in Eltham is the Montsalvat Artists Colony, and today it’s an interactive arts festival. Live music, art demos, workshops – it’s all happening.

Melbourne Fringe Festival (14 Sept-1 Oct)
One of the best — and largest — festivals in the country, Melbourne Fringe electrifies with its mixture of culture, theatre, dance, art. You won’t know what to expect, so head back here often for reviews of the best shows.

Fetish Expo (16 September)
Part Oz Kink Fest, the Fetish Expo is a place to see and be seen, watch shibari demonstrations, and stock up on a Wartenburg Wheel or two. Don’t know what we’re talking about? Head to the Fetish Expo to learn.

Pop-Up Globe (21 Sept-12 November)
A full-size reproduction of the Globe Theatre is popping up in the Botanical Gardens. Yes, that Globe. The one where Shakespeare’s plays were performed. Book in to see one (or all four) productions of the Bard’s works.

Pop-Up Globe

Royal Melbourne Oktoberfest (23 September)
For the first time, an Oktoberfest festival is taking over the Royal Exhibition Centre and serving all six Munich Oktoberfest breweries’ beer. Don a dirndl, hop into some lederhosen, and get ready to do some Schuhplattler.

Jazz Party (26 September)
Jazz Party turns The Curtin Hotel into the place to be every Monday this month. The roaming popup jazz extravaganza is the final residency of 2017 before the forthcoming album + tour. Get in while you can.

Royal Melbourne Oktoberfest
