Twins Melbourne Comedy Festival

Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2017: Jess Perkins & Naomi Higgins – Twins

Twins, presented by Jess Perkins and Naomi Higgins certainly packs a punch… and a slap. Jess and Naomi are both RAW Comedy National Finalists, from 2015 and 2016 respectively.

Quite frankly, it is very hard to believe that these two ladies have only been performing comedy for the last couple of years. The craftsmanship of their material and the ease with which they perform really does befit that of someone who has been at this game a heck of a lot longer than they have! To put it simply, these women are naturals.

Twins kicks off with a small sketch – don’t worry guys, there is only one, as Jess reassures us. It follows a 20-minute set from each comedian; Jess takes the first slot, Naomi the second.

Both sets traverse subjects familiar to any regular comedy-goer. These include: terrible jobs, families, and relationships. Although the topics are very familiar, each performer tackles them with flair, originality, and most importantly, an opinion. These ladies have brains and they are not afraid to use them!

Jess is a very warm performer, she draws you into her world using body language and facial expressions. She skilfully delivers punchline after punchline punctuating her jokes with very pointed looks to the audience. Quite often she doesn’t have to articulate what she is thinking, her face does the work for her.

Naomi presents material that is a little more jarring. Jarring but very clever. With a longer set she would be able to ease us into her slightly blunter style of comedy with a little more ease. Naomi very skilfully weaves her pointed observations and comments about the state of modern Australia into tales centred around her family.

If you would like to see two comedic powerhouses in one show (and who wouldn’t?), then this is the show for you!
