We were invited to take part in an exclusive yum cha lunch with some of Melbourne’s top food bloggers.

For all of you yum cha virgins, here’s our guide for the ultimate yum cha experience at Tim Ho Wan!

  1. Start with tea and dim sum. The word ‘Yum Cha’ literally means ‘drink tea’ and refers to a traditional Chinese style brunch meal made up of many small dishes, or dim sum. We started with steaming cups of traditional Chinese tea paired with the light and crispy Golden Tofu to get our palates going!
  2. The fun part of Yum Cha is ordering a lot of dishes (every foodie’s dream)! You can go on an ordering spree to Tim Ho Wan and taste a wide variety of dim sum dishes without breaking the bank. For a group of four, start off with four to six dishes. You can always order more if you’re still hungry! Our recommendations:
    • Baked Bun with BBQ Pork – slightly sweet, slightly savoury with a crispy shell, these will have you asking for seconds!
    • Prawn Dumplings – a dim sum classic, for all the dumpling lovers.
    • Vermicelli Roll with BBQ Pork – light and savoury, the pork is on point!
    • Spring Rolls – crispy outside, savoury inside, need I say more?

Dim sum generally come in sets of three serves, so keep that in mind when ordering!

  3. Finish off with something sweet. Tim Ho Wan’s Golden Dust buns are the talk of the yum cha town! A sweet black bun with a shimmery golden stripe across the top, filled with an oozing custard centre. Equal parts tasty and beautiful, and the best way to finish off your yum cha experience!
