MSO Pixar in Concert

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra – Pixar In Concert

We’re big supporters of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at The Plus Ones. The team continuously brings fresh, engaging content to Melburnian audiences and keeps our reputation as a cultural hub strong. In one of its first movie and symphony combinations of the year, the MSO team brought us a collage of Pixar classics.

Whether young or old or having grown up with them (as I did), Pixar movies are so layered and provide something for everyone. In this performance, it was a pleasant surprise that the movies were shown entirely without dialogue. The music was placed front and centre with the scores for each snippet designed to unfold the stories within. And unfold they did!

I counted over 10 Pixar movies over the roughly two-hour performance. All of my favourites such as Finding Nemo, Up and Inside Out were there along with some that I haven’t seen. Each snippet went for around 10 minutes, and for me demonstrated an underlying theme to focus on relationships.

Up, for example, focused on the beginning of the movie and the tale of Carl and Ellie’s life. If you’ve seen the movie, imagine this set to a beautiful live score. It pulled at everyone’s heartstrings and there was barely a dry eye in the theatre.

In many ways the performance was an ode to the Newman brothers who have written scores to several of the Pixar films. Their creative genius is enhanced by the lack of dialogue in this very special MSO performance.
