The South Melbourne Market is a favourite here at TPO. We head down each year to experience the summer sessions and love the alfresco space. This year, the Market is holding its fourth annual Mussel & Jazz Festival from 11 to 12 March 2017. We’ve been before and the celebration of great seafood, free family fun and music makes for a fabulous weekend.
This year, the festival will be bigger than ever! Somehow the team convinced the City of Port Phillip to close off Cecil Street and we’re looking at a street festival that materially expands on the previous four years.
The day is geared towards free family entertainment and a relaxed day out. Over the duration of the festival some of the best jazz musicians in the country are making appearances along with a host of other live entertainers. We’ve also been promised a full oyster bar and all the mussels you can eat!
At the launch of the festival, we had the super knowledgable team from South Melbourne Seafood provide some insight (and delicious dishes) on the main event. The Mussels. They’re actually quite an an interesting creature taking between 17-24 months to mature for your plate. This certainly gave me a moment of pause as I chowed them down at speed.
I don’t think Mussel need to worry about any shortages thought. We were told that the festival is bringing in 3.5 tonnes of mussels to sate our appetites. I told you, ALL the mussels you can eat!
