The South Melbourne Night Market represents the best of three worlds: food, entertainment and drinks. You can visit every Thursday until 23 February 2017. The important point there is Thursday, which means that you can create yourself somewhat of a night market feast with the Queen Victoria Market on Wednesday, South Melbourne Market on Thursday, and the Coburg Market on Friday. Go Melbourne!
This year, three of the four streets that corner the market — Cecil, York, and Coventry — will play host to a suite of food trucks, artisans, and entertainers as well as local market favourites. If I’m not mistaken, the outside area of the market along Cecil Street has undergone somewhat of a revamp with the new alfresco feel perfect for a summer drink.
We were invited along for the media tour and had the chance to experience an evening at the Night Market. On a hot day, starting with fresh coconut juice from COCOFIX was a perfect start. The team even brand the coconuts with your unique logo and can be hired for private get togethers.
Frencheese was next with some piping hot raclette. While raclette is usually a winter dish, I was at the market with a legit Frenchie and her view was that raclette has no season! After all-of-the-cheese, a cold beer from Colonial Brewing goes down a treat along with paella from Simply Spanish.
Feeling a little on the portly side, we did a couple of laps around the market and spoke with some local traders who had been there for a while.
One of the cooler aspects of the South Melbourne Night Market is that a lot of the day traders stick around for the evening session. Many of them have been at the market for over a decade and are all too happy to have a yarn.
To finish the fab night out I would recommend a fresh fruit salad in a hollowed out pineapple from Boisdale Best and a creamy gelato from Bibelot. It was a very, very satisfying night out!
