Heineken City Shapers Festival

When Heineken throws a party, you go.

My previous escapades with the European beer company include a luxury boat cruise, a city food and drink tour, shamelessly crashing a US Open rooftop party in NYC, a Day of the Dead fiesta, and an infamous night with Peking Duk and a TPO writer. Needless to say, my expectations were high.

At the start of the night, all we knew was the arrival time, location, and dress code. When we checked in at Southern Cross station and were greeted by a vintage Harry Potter-style train, I knew we were in for a night of adventures. Heineken literally pulled out all the stops for this event – with a pop-up train platform that delivered us right to the venue’s front door.

This time the theme was ‘city shapers’ – a party celebrating the cities that have shaped Melbourne. The signature green lager bottles greeted us on arrival and kept us hydrated as we wove our way through a homage to Amsterdam’s red light district. Next was a New York City inspired loft party, with live music, flair bartenders pouring lagerita cocktails (tequila, lime, and Heineken), and trendy morsels.

We could have hopped back on the train then and counted it as an excellent night out. But it turned out the party was just getting started when the loft opened up to reveal a Singapore street scene with food stalls and dancing dragons. The flavours here included bao, fried noodles, and Heineken draught infused with chili and lemongrass. Drummers and bejeweled dancers kept the energy buzzing as they lead us past the narrow street market and into an open warehouse. There the surprise act of the night, Hot Dub Time Machine, claimed the stage to kick off a dance party celebrating music from the 1950s through to 2016. We happily joined in the fun of shouting along to 80’s power ballads and busting out some retro dance moves.

The Heineken team neatly summed up the evening’s experience by encouraging us to ‘Enjoy the ride!’
