It’s okay everyone, Lady Sings It Better are here to save the world, and finish off your 2016 MICF with the best show of the festival. Yep, I’m calling it. I saw their show in 2015 and I didn’t think it was possible for that calibre of comedy to be exceeded, but they have done that with their new show and I’m a little in love with the brains that came up with the whole thing.
A comedy cabaret that makes your ears endlessly happy while having you in stitches at the fact so many pop songs are endlessly creepy when you stop to think about it for two seconds. Maroon 5’s first hit is some especially creepy domestic violence content.
Armed in the greatest shiny gold, the four ladies had flawless musical accompaniment from equally shiny Hayden Bartrop and Lauren Allison (damn there’s some legendary cajon playing in this show). The Ladies are gonna fix the world by reciting Kanye West lyrics as beat poems, using each other as plot devices, and owning comedy skills so magnificent my plus one and I were literally clutching each other with laughter to stop from falling into the aisle.
An important side note is the fact that this isn’t just a comedy show – there are some spine chilling harmonies, and I mean spine chilling in the good way. There’s also the spine chillingness of Tom Jones’ ‘Delilah’, but if anyone didn’t already think that song was creepy then you’ll be converted once the great prop knife comes out for some re-enactment. Add in a bound and gagged audience member, and it’s just your regular fantastic night at the Butterfly Club.
I’m not kidding when I say this is my pick of the whole festival. Lady Sings It Best, and if you miss them at MICF then get your ass to Sydney for their next lot of shows.
