There’s no other event that’s quite like Melbourne Music Week (MMW). Returning in 2015 for its sixth year, 2016’s program is hotter than ever. MMW is known not just for their stellar lineups of local and international bands but also for their fantastic flagship venues. Each year they have popped up in unusual and interesting locations across Melbourne. This year the former Royal Women’s Hospital basement will provide an exciting new stage to celebrate Melbourne’s thriving music scene.
The night’s headliner band was the thought provoking Banoffee whose synth pop sent chills through the audience. With a small group of special guest vocalists and a couple of excellent dancers her show was definitely headliner material. A personal favorite of the night was I’lls. The crowd loved the duo’s unique combination of analogue and digital instruments and showed their support with a lot of foot stomping and possibly the loudest applause of the night. Our group had not heard of electronic duo Kllo’s before but we now have them fixed firmly on our radar. What an exciting up and coming band. The guest DJ’s of the night made sure there was never a dull moment between sets. Over eight days, more than 100 events – half of which are free – take place during the day and night in our city’s live music venues, on the streets, in laneways and in Melbourne’s unique spaces.
MMW is defiantly worth getting into and we cannot wait until next year.
