Sitting Pretty on the 89th Floor

You know how sometimes you just want to lean back (perhaps with a beautiful view) and let others look after you?

Yes? Yes. Then book yourself into a degustation at Eureka 89. That stands for the 89th floor. It takes two elevators to get to the top. Your ears may even pop on the way up. Or maybe I could just tell you it’s one of the highest restaurants in the Southern Hemisphere.

Want to watch the city at work? Twinkling in the twilight? How about a sunset over the water? Sit at one of the corner tables and you’ll see all three. Eureka 89 has degustation dining down to a science. From the moment I walked in the door, the staff were there guiding me every step of the way – up the escalators, to my window seat, and through all the wine and food pairings. The restaurant offers 5 and 7 course degustations, complete with wine pairings. The food hits a sweet spot, melding luxury with comfort fare flavours. One of our courses delivered potato bake flavour nostalgia on the outside and a surprise caviar centre. Another was buttery soft tuna tartare topped with finely sliced beetroot.

The portions pack a punch of engaging flavours without being overwhelming. Think fermented cucumber, yuzu & jalapeño, smoky vegetables, and earthy mushrooms. Each dish is prettily plated and matched with wine complimenting the flavours. Your meal might even be served by a French waiter pouring French wine in a rotating parade of Riedel glassware. My fellow plus one and I savoured a weekday birthday degustation. We were in good company, as this appears to be the venue to celebrate a special occasion. A birthday, graduation, or a certain holiday starting with the letter V.

Make sure you linger long enough to watch the sunset. And check out the view from the bathrooms. They are *both* very photogenic.
