Indulging in a pastry (and actually enjoying it) is one of the key woes of the modern gluten-free Melbourne foodie. For me, the term “gluten free pastries” conjured the idea of cardboard tasting rock hard biscuits. That is, until I tried Glazed Gluten Free Patisserie.
Gluten free Melbournians rejoice! Glazed has perfected the art of breads, pastries, cakes, and savory delights. Their entire menu is free from gluten, dairy, and nuts, with many vegan options as well.
We grazed our way through the best of the Glazed menu at their new Sunday Afternoon High Tea offering. Over the course of two hours, we indulged ourselves in a range savory snacks; quiche, pasties, mini wraps, and rolls, and decadent sweets; mouse, tiramisu, scones, and the krembo dessert, all paired with their signature in-house tea blends.
The flavour, and quality of the food was second to none; the Glazed menu does not taste gluten free, dairy free or nut free. In fact, I would have never guessed morsels this tasty could also cater to people with extreme food intolerances.
The scones are perfectly light and fluffy, wraps and rolls are flavourful, and the cakes are, well, positively devour-able.
Glazed is best known for their krembo; a fluffy meringue atop an artisan biscuit, glazed in chocolate, with a berry jam filled syringe protruding from the top of the dessert. “First you squeeze the jam into the centre, then you eat the whole thing in one bite,” Liran Adika, Glazed Chef, instructed me. Biting into the krembo is like biting into a chocolate covered cloud.
Chef Liran Adika is the mastermind behind Glazed Gluten Free. He trained under celebrity chef Shannon Bennett (Vue De Monde) and has spent years perfecting his recipes and technique to make the perfect gluten free goodies.
The idea of Glazed came after noticing the increasing prevalence of food allergies and intolerances, and growing demand for gluten free, dairy free and nut free products. It’s a goldmine for those with gluten, dairy, or nut intolerances and is one of the few places in Melbourne offering a high tea that caters to these intolerances.
$69 gets you four savoury dishes, fresh scones, four desserts, bottomless tea, a coffee, and an afternoon you won’t forget. A bargain in my opinion!
The Glazed High Tea runs every Sunday with two-hour seating sessions and reservations can be made via their website: www.glazedglutenfree.com.au
