For those who are seeking some brilliantly written pieces that are expertly carried and performed by one actor, then ‘The Thick Of It’ is a show that needs to be added to your viewing list and soon. It is a charming and haunting story touching on those feelings that anybody who has ever lived alone, or found themselves in a lonely situation in general, could definitely relate to.
With some creative audience participation at the beginning, the familiar expertise of solid character switching narrative techniques is underway, performed by one of the strongest in the field. Emily Taylor is a whirlwind dramatic and comedic performer who is able to draw upon the deepest thoughts, feelings, and physical and vocal attributes of a character, and present them solidly on stage in such a grounded manner that you are immersed and caring about them right from the start. There are many troubled, sincere, bold, and chirpy characters in this performance that are truly magnificent, and slot in delightfully with the rhythm and pace of the show.
Taylor has also proven she is an adept writer, with beautifully written monologues strewn throughout the show that have obviouslt been constructed with some genuine thought and intent. The segues between scenes and locations is also a notable highlight, with creative play definitely utilised, giving an overall sense that although the troubles and joy are unique to each character, they are actually far more connected than they appear.
This is a wonderful show that deserves full houses, and a performer who deserves the accolades a multi-talented individual should.
