My plus one and I headed down to Bird’s Basement on a Wednesday night to see comedian Jimeoin perform live. Bird’s Basement is a newcomer to the jazz bar scene that is premiering standup comedy to its list of entertainment offerings. Bird’s is also a bar and restaurant, so you can head down early for a pre-show dinner and get boozed up throughout the night’s proceedings.
Jimeoin is one of those comedians who evokes the memory of late-night TV in my early teens and being told off for staying up too late. He is a stand-up veteran, holding up against the test of time and still able to pull the crowds in and satisfy every last one of them.
Jimeoin presented a mix of his old and new material, which worked well with the crowd. He has a canny ability to take dad jokes and finish them with unexpected dirty twists that had the audience lapping it up. There were two other acts on the bill, Lehmo and Harley Breen, who both warmed up the crowd for the main act.
Bird’s Basement has a full food menu, wine list and cocktails to choose from. We managed to sample a few items as well as a bottle of Shiraz which hit the spot. The space is definitely suited to the jazz side of things and I look forward to coming to check it out again for some music in the future.
