We all know that the LGBTIQ community knows how to party (just go to the Smith St/Gertrude St intersection on any given Thursday!) this year’s Midsumma Festival is shaping up to be a great three weeks of hot sweaty summer fun.
The Midsumma Festival is Melbourne’s annual queer celebration. The Festival has been held for the last 27 years and has morphed into one of Melbourne’s most entertaining parties. There will be 85 venues showcasing 100s of different events ranging from visual art, theatre, spoken word, cabaret, film, live music, parties, sport, social events and public forums.
The Plus Ones managed to go last year and had a blast at several events. We can’t wait to take in more this year along with some old favourites which are back bigger and better than ever!
Carnival – We always say that opening parties are the best! Carnival promises five hours of free entertainment in the Alexandra gardens.
T-Dance – Following Carnival, Midsumma turns the Alexandra gardens into one of the best open-air dance parties going! Put your party pants on and get ready to jive into dusk with some of the hottest dance tunes this side of Berlin.
Summer Jamboree – I went to a few of these last year on hot summer nights. They are held at the Northcote Town Hall and host a number of bands, acts and performers for all to enjoy. There’s usually a food truck or too as well!
ABBAR – How can you say no to this! Two glorious nights of nothing but ABBA as Midsumma turns The 86 into what must surely be the happiest place on earth.
Park Lounge – Kelly Park will be transformed into a magical outdoor lounge right in the heart of Werribee CBD. There’s great live music featuring Monique Brumby and her band alongside the best local talent (and some incredibly cheesy disco tunes).
Sailing – I went last year. My first sailing experience. It wasn’t what I imagined, it was better! I’d highly recommend heading down to the Altona yacht club to enjoy a day out with the sailing club.
The festival is jam packed with so many great events. If you head to one that you think warrants a mention we’d love to hear about it! Hope everyone has a great Midsumma!
