What is a cruise ship Captain Roland Carter to do, with a ship enshrouded in a deadly, possibly supernatural, fog? How to placate the wealthy patrons before they mutiny in boredom? Can he reconcile career and family, when faced with a personal crisis of his own, dramaturge son Tarquin Hickey meekly demanding an opportunity to showcase his dubious sketches to an unwilling audience that is going nowhere? Of course he can! But first, a strip-tease. This is the improbable premise of DEATH BOAT! – a frenetic zany nautical one-man sketch extravaganza.
Actor and writer Corey M. Glamuzina has honed his craft over the years, sharing the stage (and love of capitals and exclamation marks) as a member of improv group The Big HOO-HAH!. Corey’s taken bits of characters he’s worked on to develop his debut solo and fully-scripted show.
Corey needs less than an hour to give us a taste of everything. A true triple-threat performer, the man can act, sing and dance. And by sing, act and dance, I mean do Sean Connery impersonations, Star Wars rap, and perform obsessively choreographed 80s mimeoke (mime karaoke).
DEATH BOAT! moves along at full-throttle, chock-a-block with a wacky cast of six crew and the characters they perform on stage to keep the morale (if not the ship) afloat. It’s got a lot of pop and geek references, like a madcap theatrical equivalent of a Rick and Morty episode. I won’t be seeing a senile retired James Bond in a wheelchair chase so soon. Well, maybe not one where 007, a villainous mastermind and their geriatric nurse are all played simultaneously by one person and three accents.
DEATH BOAT! is a must see if you are fan of offbeat sketch comedy. Also nominated for ‘Scariest-goddamn-depraved-clown-outside-of-a-Stephen-King-movie-remake of 2017’.
