National Museum of Flight: The Wheels & Wings Show

If you are looking for a fantastic day out which will be sure to appeal to all the family, I strongly recommend you take a look at THE WHEELS AND WINGS SHOW, which is taking place at the NATIONAL MUSEUM OF FLIGHT just a small travel out of the city to East Fortune.

I went down last weekend just to refresh myself about the existing facilities and review what is permanently in place, I was reminded it is more than enough to warrant a grand day out.  The superstar of the show is a retired Concord, sat majestically in the main hangar with associated items telling the story of its birth, its wonderful history as the iconic style setter of a new age of plane travel, before its tragic disaster and ultimate retirement.  All this is captured In a rather moving film show which is shown regularly in the hangar.

FIRST PUBLIC DAY AFTER REFURBISHMENT AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF FLIGHT AT EAST FORTUNE, EAST LOTHIAN. THE HANGAR IS ONE OF TWO SECOND WORLD WAR HANGARS TO REOPEN FOLLOWING A 3.6MILLION RESTORATION AND REDEVELOPMENT.

In addition to the spectacular sight of Concord there is a host of additional planes of all shapes, styles, and eras to comprehend including a Red Arrow on display.  An interesting area about the birth of the RAF in association with the Great War plus you are reminded that the actual sight is historic because the first ever successful flight across the Atlantic took place here.  For smaller ages there are plenty of interactive displays which teach, well, everyone, as I certainly learnt about the science of creating an airborne flying machine.

I spent a good few hours wandering the sight and enjoyed a hearty snack at the canteen (all produced locally sourced) and felt the day was very worthwhile, so you can expect a day to remember if you visit on the 23rd September when the event takes place.  Stunt motorbike performance teams, over a hundred classic cars on display, birds of prey displays, plus crafts, activities, and play areas on top of the displays mentioned above.  Sounds like an event not to be missed.
