Urban Art, Food & Libations Walking Tour

After racking our brains for nearly two weeks over what to get my mom for Mother’s Day, my sister and I treated her to the Urban Art, Food & Libations Walking Tour done by Local Roots Food Tours. The tours are a half day of tasting and viewing Midtown’s restaurants and murals.

We started at Low Brau, where we got special treatment with one of the servers waiting on just our table and sharing Low Brau’s story. While he talked, we tried the Bratwurst served on a soft pretzel roll and washed it down with Dunkel Lager, a lager that hasn’t changed it’s recipe of water, hops, malt and yeast in over 400 years. The Brats and beer lived up to the hype they’ve created! As well as the atmosphere and decor of this establishment, following the traditional Bavarian style pub, including long picnic tables where patrons can mingle.

Next on the tour was Ficklin Wilcox, a unique port tasting room offering Portuguese varietals from their winery in Madera, CA. I’ve done a lot of wine tasting in my day, but have never been to an all port tasting. A sweet, caramel and clove change! After the port, was a visit to Pachamama Coffee Coop, Tamaya Sushi, Sticky Gator, and finished with Ginger Elizabeth.

In between establishments, we saw several different murals in midtown. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the stories behind them. My favorite was a cactus sculpture made of wrought iron, placed on top of a cinder block wall, enclosing a tanning salon’s back patio. Apparently, the tanning salon had a few run-ins with peeping Toms, so they contracted a local artist to weld a very prickly, cactus sculpture for the top of the wall. A clever, easy on the eye solution!
