Fringe Review: Dave Callan – A Little Less Conversation 3: Even Less Conversation

Comedian Dave Callan returns to Melbourne Fringe to complete his trilogy of dance shows. Yes, that’s right, this is the third time he will be cavorting on stage with backup dancers, video, props and multiple costume changes in his latest show ‘A Little Less Conversation 3: Even Less Conversation‘. For lovers of pop culture, musical hits and Internet memes, there is a lot to enjoy in this show.

As the name suggests, this is a comedy show with not a whole lot of talking.  Callan and his excellent dance troupe instead take us on a journey from ‘caveman dancing’ all the way to modern hit songs, complete with their music video choreography. Callan explains in his own Q&A how he has learnt all these routines by watching YouTube videos.  I can’t help but wonder if he was also watching a lot of adorable cat videos, as there are plenty of these in the show too.  We particularly liked the part about mondegreens (misheard lyrics in songs).

There is no doubt in our minds that Dave Callan has put a lot of work into learning these dance routines, which are more comedic than impressive. Rounding out the show, we are treated to the Viking-like Callan performing Beyoncé’s ‘All the Single Ladies’ dance in full, which he claims took him 37 hours to learn.  For fellow Fringe-goers looking for an easy laugh and a slapstick humor show, this is for you.
