Fat people are awesome.
Fat bodies are awesome.
Fat babes dancing on stage?
Breathtaking!
I have followed the production of Force Majeure’s ‘Nothing To Lose‘ in the lead up to its launch at the Sydney Festival last year, where it frankly kicked ass. I was borderline ecstatic to discover that it was being brought down to Melbourne.
Anyone who walked into this first Melbourne performance of ‘Nothing To Lose’ with any preconceptions about fat people had their eyes opened by the end of the amazing show.
For anyone who’s lived in a fat body in a society that can’t seem to stop policing and politicising, the show is endlessly relatable.
For those who have no idea, it’s a small window into just how mundane and borderline offensive every unwanted ‘compliment’ and comment about someone’s body becomes:
“You’ve got such a pretty face”
“Have you tried the Atkins diet?”
“You’d be SO hot if you just lost 10 kilos.”
This show is unapologetic and will have you laughing and clapping, and even had me spontaneously brought to tears by the finale. The performers use dance, comedy, and interaction with the audience to weave stories and share experiences. Kate Champion and Kelli Jean Drinkwater are telling a story experienced by people every day, and Ghenoa Gela (also starring) has brought it to life through beautiful unrestricted movements.
The show will have you leaving in deep thought, and perhaps going home to try out a few of your own moves while letting your tum be free.
You’ve got Nothing To Lose.
