There are concerts where you sit politely in the Concert Hall and admire the music. Then there are concerts where staying in your seat becomes increasingly unrealistic. The Cat Empire with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra was firmly in the second category.
Returning to the Sydney Opera House after their sold-out orchestral collaboration in 2024, The Cat Empire brought their irrepressible mix of jazz, Latin, flamenco, funk, and global rhythms to the Concert Hall for three nights. This time, the scale felt even bigger: the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, flamenco artists Arte Kanela, and a huge choir of secondary school students joined the band on stage.
I went in wondering how The Cat Empire’s famously spontaneous, anything-could-happen live energy would translate to a full orchestra. The answer: spectacularly.

Long-time collaborator Roscoe James Irwin’s arrangements didn’t simply add strings to familiar songs. They opened them up. Brass punched harder, strings swept through the Concert Hall, and percussion seemed to come from everywhere. The band’s Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and flamenco influences suddenly had a cinematic scale without losing the looseness and joy that makes a Cat Empire gig feel like a party.
And what a party it became. The Sydney Symphony brought extraordinary depth and precision, while The Cat Empire supplied the glorious unpredictability. Add Arte Kanela’s flamenco energy and a massed student choir, and at moments it felt as though half of Sydney had somehow found its way onto the stage.

The real magic, though, was watching the boundaries disappear: between band and orchestra, classical concert and dance floor, devoted fans and symphony regulars. By the end, the grandeur of the Opera House felt less formal and much more communal.
This wasn’t The Cat Empire with an orchestra politely sitting behind them. It was a genuine musical collision – exuberant, theatrical, and gloriously alive.
If orchestral concerts aren’t normally your thing, this might be the one to change your mind.
