With another little one on the way this year, my partner and I have been on a mission to soak up as much quality time with our toddler as possible. So when the chance came up to spend a night at Hyatt Regency Sydney — Australia’s largest upscale hotel, planted right on the edge of Darling Harbour — we didn’t need much convincing. The Plus Ones were invited to experience the hotel’s unique Kids Concierge service, but what we didn’t expect was just how thoughtfully the “kids” side of things had been done. This isn’t a hotel that simply tolerates children, it’s one that’s genuinely figured out how to make them (and their exhausted parents) feel like VIPs.
The location
Hyatt Regency Sydney sits right in the heart of the CBD, on the shores of Darling Harbour, which for a family means you’re never more than a five-minute stroll from somewhere to burn off toddler energy. WILDLIFE Sydney Zoo and SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium are practically on the doorstep, and my son (despite fighting off a bit of a winter cold) still lit up at the chance to head to Tumbalong Park for some play time before an early dinner. It’s the kind of location that does the entertaining for you, which on a one-night staycation with a toddler in tow is worth its weight in gold.
The kids’ offering
This is where Hyatt Regency Sydney quietly outdoes itself. The hotel’s Kid’s Concierge service is designed to make little guests feel just as pampered as the adults, and on our stay all the offerings were delivered straight to our Harbour-view room. The hotel offer kids-sized robes, which was one of sweetest touches, and one that had my son strutting around the room feeling very grown up — along with a colouring map of Darling Harbour, and a goodie bag that he was still clutching the next morning. There were complimentary welcome treats and fruit on the table too. None of it felt gimmicky; it was fun without ever tipping into naff, which is a harder balance to strike than it sounds when it comes to kids.
The food
We kicked things off with dinner at Jackalberry Bar & Restaurant, the hotel’s ground-floor restaurant whose menu genuinely reads like a passport: global flavours spanning Europe, Asia and the Americas, all delivered with real polish. The kids’ menu deserves a special mention. Rather than the usual chicken nuggets and chips cop-out, it mirrored the adult menu’s quality in smaller, toddler-friendly portions, which meant everyone actually enjoyed their meal. Being pregnant, I stuck to a couple of delicious mocktails rather than anything from the extensive wine list, and honestly didn’t miss out — they were crafted with such care.
The next morning’s buffet breakfast at Sailmaker Restaurant was a great way to round out the stay. Buffets can so easily tip into chaotic and overwhelming — this one was neither. The spread was generous and fresh, with both continental and full Australian options, and it never felt like the ‘free-for-all’ buffets sometimes become. A brilliant touch for families: kids under five eat for free, and children aged six to twelve get breakfast at half price, which takes the sting out of what can otherwise be an expensive way to start the day.
The locale and the experience
What tied the whole stay together was how easy it all felt. We spent the afternoon curled up watching movies as a family, unhurried, with nowhere to rush off to. It’s exactly the kind of slow, cosy winter escape we’d been craving. For date-night inspiration (or a solo sunset moment), Zephyr Sky Bar on Level 12 is not to be missed. It’s one of the best rooftop settings in the city, with sweeping harbour views and a front-row seat to Sydney’s sunset — the sort of spot you file away for a future night out, alcohol-free or otherwise.
Across the wider hotel, the scale is impressive: featuring 878 well-appointed rooms, a knowledgeable concierge team on hand to help plan your Darling Harbour day, and dining spread across Jackalberry, Lobby Lounge, Dundee Arms and Sailmaker, several of which run a Kids Eat Free deal for children aged five to twelve from midday (kids’ menu items only, with a paying adult).
For a family staycation that manages to feel both relaxed and a little bit luxurious (kid-sized robes and all) Hyatt Regency Sydney has cracked a formula a lot of hotels only claim to do. We left tired in the best way, with my son brimming with excitement and already asking when we’re going back.
