Buddy the Elf is in Sydney Town.

If you, like me are the first person to start playing Christmas movies as soon as December 1st hits, then you’ve most likely seen (and loved!) the classic movie, Elf featuring Will Ferrell.

When I was invited to experience Elf the Musical playing at The Sydney Opera House, you can only imagine my sheer delight! For those not familiar with the storyline, we meet Buddy, played by Gareth Issac, a young orphan who ends up at the North Pole after crawling into Santa’s gift sack. Gareth brings a tonne of enthusiasm to his part, along with Buddy’s cheery grin.

Raised as an elf, Buddy remains blissfully unaware that he’s actually human, despite his towering size and less-than-stellar toy-making skills. With the help of Santa, Buddy heads to New York City in search of his Father – a hilariously disinterested and workaholic Walter Hobbs, played by Simon Burke. The audience was especially taken back by Madeline Mackenzie who brings an upbeat energy to each office scene.

After finding out his father is on Santa’s naughty list and his younger half-brother is not so sure on the idea of Santa being real, he gets to work on restoring everyone’s Christmas spirit and getting his Dad back on Santa’s nice list! Along the way, he meets Jovie – who quickly becomes his ‘Elf-girlfriend’, played by Brianna Bishop.

Elf the Musical is a brand-new concert production that brings holiday magic to Sydney’s shores. Directed by Eric Giancola and Vanessa Scammell, with music composed by Matthew Sklar with lyrics by Chad Beguelin – the show is truly all parts festive and feel-good show with just the right amount of holiday cheesiness to warm your heart.

Guests can expect a Christmas extravaganza with fabulous costumes, dazzling performances and an on-stage band of 15. Presented by the Sydney Opera House and John Frost for Crossroads Live, in association with Shake & Stir Theatre Co –  you almost feel as if you’ve been whisked away to NYC for a white Christmas!

Elf The Musical is playing until 29 December at the Sydney Opera House.
