Whirly Bird restaurant + bar celebrates its first birthday in style

Pyrmont is home to Whirly Bird, a beautiful restaurant/bar/hive of activity/all-around fun place.  Smack dab in the centre of the action on Union Stree, Whirly Bird offers up casual dining, great drinks, and a fun atmosphere. The team ramped up the action to celebrate their first birthday, and invited The Plus Ones along for the party.

The sign outside says ‘Fine Poultry and Liquor’, and inside the menu is devoted to that most finest of birds, the chicken. With rotisserie chicken taking centre stage on the menu, the supporting cast is made up of other easy-to-eat dishes. Peking duck, DIY burritos, even vegan bowls — it’s all here, and it’s all delicious.

With wooden panels and tables, the space is nothing if not cosy. There’s a large bar in the centre of the room, with a stage area to one side, and seated tables throughout. A partitioned-off back section, full of more tables, makes for a quieter spot — and it’s where my friends and I congregated both times we’ve been to Whirly Bird.

Throughout the night of the party, bubbles, wine, and beer flowed freely, while canapes made their way throughout the room, to be snapped up quickly by party-goers. The standout for us, though, was the margarita. Made to order by the well-trained bar staff, the delicious concoction went down a treat. My +1 and I may or may not have had more than, say, two.

The Plus Ones’ co-founder, Theresa, and her +1

We were treated to a magnificently fun performance by The Birdcage. The burlesque, cabaret, and entertainment troupe performs every Saturday evening at Whirly Bird. Their brand of 1920s glamour is all huge feathers, sequined outfits, and dancing-dancing-dancing. The crowd of partygoers couldn’t get enough during the performance, with phones recording all the merriment and everyone’s eyes glued to the great performers.

There’s so much to love at Whirly Bird — live entertainment, great food and drinks. We suggest joining in their ‘Aperitivo Hour’. From Sunday to Thursday, they’re serving up $5 wine, draught beers, and amari (Italian liquor-based drinks) and $10 cocktails + bar snacks. It’s all yours from 5-7pm.
