The Unbelievables at the Sydney Opera House

As the lights dimmed and the music began to play in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House on Wednesday night, audience members knew they were there to see a show called The Unbelievables, but I can bet they were still probably a little sceptical of just how unbelievable this show could be. After all, living in the age of the smart phone, with thousands of hours of entertainment at your fingertips, it can be hard to keep people’s attention, let alone wow them.

Well, The Unbelievables proves there really is nothing like live entertainment. Our host for the evening – comedian and magician Harrison Greenbaum – quickly won the audience over with his quick and edgy humour, and guided us through an evening of one unbelievable act after another.

The variety show format works extremely well as there’s something for everyone in the show, and the world-class performers give you more than your money’s worth, with a spectacular night of comedy, magic, acrobatics and death-defying feats. Tony Award winning ventriloquist Jay Johnson had everyone laughing along with him and his monkey sidekick, and the magic of virtuoso Shin Lim awed the audience.

The music in the show was also top notch, with a six piece big band, and singer Emi Secrest lending her buttery vocals as accompaniment to acts throughout the night, as well as treating the audience to a rousing solo number.

The stand out act of the evening for me and my plus one though, was professional sword swallower Brett Loudermilk. Not only was his sword swallowing unbelievably freaky and amazing, but he had the charm and wit to keep the audience right there with him from the moment he stepped out on stage until he stepped off.

So grab a ticket, forget your worries for the night, and treat yourself to something truly unbelievable.

The Unbelievables runs at the Sydney Opera House 19-29 December.
